14 April 2005 During a gale a 40m turbine blade shattered at the Crystal Rig wind farm in the Lammermuir Hills close to Dunbar. Only a small portion of the blade weighing several tonnes remained attached to the turbine. This raises serious concerns about proximity of turbines to public rights of way.

23 March 2005 The results of the recent Ettrick & Yarrow Community Council survey on attitudes to the Broadmeadows Wind Farm were made public. Of the 266 survey forms distributed to valley residents within 5km of the proposed development there were 166 returned, of which 3 were spoiled or invalid. This represents at 68.5% return. The response to the question

"Do you support or oppose the proposal to construct a wind farm at Broadmeadows"

was as follows:

1

Completely support

39

23.9%

2

13

8.0%

3

9

5.5%

4

7

4.3%

5

Completely oppose

95

58.3%

This result indicates unequivocal opposition to the proposal. The ration of opposition to support is of the order to two to one.

The community council concluded:

"The high level of response to the survey is a strong indication of the interest that this application has generated and allows an extremely accurate view of public opinion to be formed.

The results of the Opinion Survey are a clear and unambiguous expression of the views of those who would be most affected by the proposal. At two to one against the proposal to construct a wind farm, the result has to be regarded as significant opposition"

The results of the survey have been communicated to Scottish Borders Council.
